NPS voorzitter Gregory Rusland meent dat de groene partij aan het begin staat van een nieuwe glorie. Hij verwacht dat de NPS als grootste partij uit de bus zal komen op 26. De Surinaamse Partij van de Arbeid (SPA) met vakbondsleider Marcia Clumper op de 51e plaats en Cliff Marica van Duurzaam Rechtvaardig Samenleven op 50 zijn zondag met open armen ontvangen door het drukbezochte partijcongres. De kandidatenlijst is unaniem ondersteund door alle structuren en ook zo goedgekeurd door het congres.

Rusland voerde aan dat er veel uitdagingen zijn in het land, maar oil and gas geeft de gelegenheid om uit de grote problemen te geraken. Het geld dat verdiend zal worden uit deze sector moet gebruikt worden voor de ontwikkeling van andere sectoren zodat er een brede economische basis ontstaat. Suriname moet terug naar de periode van regering-Venetiaan waar jongeren een huis konden bouwen, een auto konden kopen en ook op reis konden gaan naar het buitenland.

Een van de prioriteiten van de NPS is huizenbouw. Het kan volgens de partijleider niet zo zijn dat drie generaties in één huis wonen. Die situatie moet veranderen. De partij belooft niet dat in 100 of 200 dagen alle problemen opgelost zullen worden. Er moet hard gewerkt worden om het land op de rails te krijgen, waarbij niet gekeken zal worden naar persoonlijke belangen en die van familie en vrienden. Deskundigen zullen worden ingezet om de instituten weer te versterken, benadrukte Rusland.

Het aanbieden van documenten voor registratie bij het Centraal Hoofdstembureau (CHS) is vanmiddag om 15.00 uur afgesloten. 15 politieke organisaties hebben de documenten ingediend. Uiterlijk zaterdag horen de partijen of hun stukken zijn goedgekeurd. Na sluitingstijd kwam de Nationale Ontwikkelingspartij zich aanmelden, maar "laat is laat". CHS voorzitter Lilawati Punwasi-Raghoebier deelde mee dat de wet niet kan worden overtreden. Aan de vorige verkiezingen namen 17 partijen deel.
De Progressief Verheffende Partij van Roy Bhikharie heeft drie pogingen gewaagd om de stukken in te dienen. De volmacht bleek niet in orde te zijn. Na enkele aanpassingen zijn op de valreep de documenten geaccepteerd, maar er zijn nog onvolkomenheden. Niet alle bestuursleden, die in en buiten rechte de partij vertegenwoordigen, hebben de volmacht getekend. Tijdens de beoordeling zal blijken of de registratie wordt goedgekeurd door het CHS. Er is beroep mogelijk bij een eventuele afwijzing.

Politiek leider van de Volkspartij Leefbaar Suriname (VLS), Robert Vishnudatt zal niet voorkomen op de kandidatenlijst. Hij heeft de Nederlandse nationaliteit. Vishnudatt deelde journalisten mee dat hij geboren Surinamer is en zijn bijdrage altijd heeft geleverd. Hij heeft twee termijnen zich ingezet voor de VHP maar hij is niet op de juiste manier behandeld door de voorzitter van de partij, Chan Santokhi. Gemaakte beloften zouden niet zijn nageleefd. De VLS was samen met A Nyun Sranan Beweging aanwezig bij de registratie.
Vanaf dinsdag zullen de ingediende stukken van de politieke organisaties ter inzage worden gelegd voor het publiek op het kantoor van het CHS én op de website. Plaatsvervangend voorzitter Wendy Jap-A-Joe deelde journalisten mee dat de partijen per deurwaardersexploot te horen zullen krijgen of hun registratie al dan niet succesvol is. Ook de samenleving wordt geïnformeerd.
Robert Vishnudatt, the political leader of the Volkspartij Leefbaar Suriname (VLS), will not appear on the candidate list due to holding Dutch citizenship. Vishnudatt informed journalists that he is a native Surinamese and has always contributed to his country. He has served two terms for the VHP but feels he was not treated appropriately by the party's chairman, Chan Santokhi, as promises made to him were not kept. The VLS, along with A Nyun Sranan Beweging, was present during the registration process.
Starting Tuesday, the submitted documents from political organizations will be available for public viewing at the CHS office and on their website. Deputy Chairperson Wendy Jap-A-Joe informed journalists that the parties will be notified through a bailiff's writ about the success of their registration. The public will also be informed.

De BEP, NPS, ABOP en NDP hebben zich zaterdag aangemeld bij het Centraal Hoofdstembureau (CHS) om deel te nemen aan de verkiezingen van mei 2025. De Democratische Unie Suriname (DUS) heeft zich niet kunnen registreren omdat de volmacht die gegeven was door de partij niet in overeenstemming waren met de statuten. Deze partij heeft de gelegenheid om de vereiste documenten in orde te maken en terug te komen uiterlijk 24 februari tot 15.00 uur. Tot nu toe hebben 11 politieke organisaties een bewijs van registratie ontvangen. Na 24e zullen de stukken inhoudelijk worden beoordeeld.

DE Broederschap en Eenheid in de Politiek (BEP) was vóór negen uur present om zich te registreren. Partijvoorzitter Ronny Asabina deelde mee dat hij met opgeheven hoofd naar de verkiezingen gaat. De stukken van de partij waren helemaal in orde. De BEP gaat alleen de verkiezingen in en is ervan overtuigd dat ze zetels zal behalen. Bij de vorige verkiezingen veroverde deze partij twee zetels. Asabina is niet te spreken over de gewijzigde ontwerpwet over grondenrechten. De partij kan zich niet terugvinden in de ontwerpwet. De commissie van rapporteurs is ook niet gehoord bij de wijzigingen die de regering heeft
The BEP, NPS, ABOP, and NDP submitted their applications to the Central Electoral Office (CHS) on Saturday to participate in the May 2025 elections. However, the Democratic Union of Suriname (DUS) was unable to register because the power of attorney provided by the party did not comply with the statutes. The Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BEP) was present for registration before 9:00 AM. Party chairman Ronny Asabina stated that he approaches the elections with confidence. The party's documentation was in perfect order. BEP will enter the elections independently and is confident of securing seats. In the previous elections, the party won two seats. Asabina expressed dissatisfaction with the amended draft law on land rights, stating that the party cannot align itself with the draft law. The committee of rapporteurs was also not consulted regarding the changes made by the government.

Assembleevoorzitter Marinus Bee, secretaris van de ABOP, zegt dat het grondenrechtenvraagstuk geen politieke stunt is. “Het moet gewoon toegekend worden anders gaan we internationaal problemen krijgen”. Bee stelt dat als het erop aankomt om die wet te behandelen de gemeenschap zal zien wie het wel of niet meent met het volk en inderdaad een bijdrage wil leveren. De laatste vergadering was er geen quorum maar Bee zegt dat hij de ontwerpwet steeds op de agenda zal zetten tot de verkiezingen. Bee geeft aan dat hij de ontwerpwet liever op de agenda plaatst dan steeds in een discussie te zijn bij de Raad van Ministers vergaderingen. De discussies en aanpassingen worden in De Nationale Assemblee aangebracht, zoals dat vaak gebeurt. Voor de ABOP is het belangrijk dat de uitgifte ‘in de mensen hun gebieden moet worden tegengehouden’.
Partijvoorzitter Ronnie Brunswijk zegt dat hij de mensen die het niet eens zijn met de raamwet, voorbarig vindt. “Ze moeten even wachten; laten ze hun visie op papier zetten. Dat geldt ook voor de VIDS.” Hij vindt het jammer dat er vanuit andere partijen niets is gedaan om het grondenrechtenvraagstuk aan te pakken. Ook niet vanuit de partij van die ‘ingi boi’.
Brunswijk vindt dat er teveel kritiek is op het toetreden van de Amazone Partij Suriname tot de ABOP. “Als de APS gaat naar VHP of met NDP dan zou er geen kritiek zijn maar hoe ze naar de ABOP zijn wordt er een hele poeha van gemaakt. Iedereen is voor ons van toegevoegde waarde." De kandidatenlijst is al af maar Brunswijk wil nog niet zeggen wie de mensen zijn die zijn gekandideerd. Wie er zeker wel op voorkomt is Alice Amafo, die een week geleden zich weer aansloot bij de ABOP nadat ze haar eigen partij, de VVD was begonnen.

The Chairman of the Assembly, Marinus Bee, who also serves as the Secretary of ABOP, emphasizes that the issue of land rights is not a political gimmick. He stated, "It must be addressed, or we will face international challenges." Bee mentioned that when it comes time to discuss this legislation, the community will be able to discern who genuinely supports the people and is willing to contribute. Although the last meeting lacked a quorum, Bee insists that he will continue to place the draft law on the agenda until the elections. He prefers to have the draft law on the agenda rather than engaging in continuous discussions at the Council of Ministers meetings. He explained that discussions and amendments are typically made in the National Assembly. For ABOP, it is crucial that the issuance of land titles in local communities is halted.
Party Chairman Ronnie Brunswijk expressed that those who disagree with the framework law are being premature. He advised, "They should wait and put their views on paper. This applies to the VIDS as well." Brunswijk lamented that no action has been taken by other parties to address the land rights issue, including the party of the 'ingi boi.'
Brunswijk also commented on the criticism surrounding the Amazon Party of Suriname joining ABOP. He noted, "If APS were to join VHP or NDP, there would be no criticism, but joining ABOP has caused quite a stir. Everyone brings value to us." While the candidate list has been finalized, Brunswijk has not yet revealed the names of those nominated. One confirmed candidate is Alice Amafo, who rejoined ABOP a week ago after having started her own party, VVD.

Pas wanneer de NPS zetels heeft gehaald zal zij op basis van de uitspraak van het volk, bepalen met welke partij er zal worden samengewerkt. “Als de tekenen ons niet bedriegen zal de NPS heel goed uit de bus komen”, deelt partijvoorzitter Gregory Rusland mee. Volgens hem zijn olie en gas niet het enig antwoord maar het is een onderdeel waarmee Suriname uit de problemen van vandaag kan komen. “Maar als het volk de verkeerde leiders plaatst dan zullen we verder van huis zijn. Venezuela is een voorbeeld waar het land verdiend aan olie maar het volk zoekt eten in vuilnisbakken. Dat willen we absoluut niet voor Suriname. No stem tap sma san gers yu of omdat yu lob' a sma. Stem tapu sma sa kan tya yu na fesi”, roept hij op.
De NPS heeft een plan van aanpak klaar over hoe de economische situatie aan te pakken alleen weet hij niet wat de situatie is die de partij zal aantreffen mocht zij regeerverantwoordelijkheid verkrijgen. “Dus het moment waarop wij overnemen zouden we een grondige evaluatie moeten maken van hoe wij er als land voor staan. Want van 2025 tot 2028 zijn de oliedollars er nog niet en moeten we dus alternatieven ontwikkelen om die periode te kunnen overbruggen.”
“Bijna NPS naf' wroko maar we wroko”, zegt Rusland zelfverzekerd. De NPS is volgens hem dringend nodig in het bestuur van het land. “Mensen vallen ons aan, vechten tegen ons omdat we een watchdog zijn. Men is gewoon bezeten om de NPS tegen te houden maar ze liegen wij gaan gewoon door. 25 mei 2025 worden we de grootste partij.” Rusland hoopt op voldoende zetels om mee te kunnen bepalen welke richting het land op moet. Dat kon hij niet met drie zetels dus het volk moet de NPS deze keer voldoende zetels geven.

The NPS has a strategy ready to tackle the economic situation, although he acknowledges the uncertainty about the state of affairs the party will encounter if it assumes governance responsibilities. "So, the moment we take over, we would need to conduct a thorough evaluation of the country's standing. From 2025 to 2028, the oil revenues will not be there yet, and we must develop alternatives to bridge that period."
"Almost everyone says NPS must work, and we are working," Rusland says confidently. According to him, the NPS is urgently needed in the country's administration. "People attack us, fight against us because we are a watchdog. They are simply obsessed with stopping the NPS, but they are lying; we will keep moving forward. On May 25, 2025, we will become the largest party." Rusland hopes for enough seats to influence the country's direction. He couldn't do that with just three seats, so the people must give the NPS sufficient seats this time.

De voorzitter van de NDP Jennifer Geerlings-Simons zegt dat het niet waar is dat de NDP in de tien jaar dat zij aan de macht was, niets heeft gedaan aan de grondenrechten. André Misikaba gaf mee dat de NDP de aanzet wel heeft gegeven. Er was wel een wet goedgekeurd maar niet afgekondigd.
De NDP is een partij die altijd vrouwen naar voren heeft geschoven. ‘We gaan op dat pad verder’. Simons wil nog niet prijsgeven wie allemaal op de kandidatenlijst voor DNA zullen voorkomen. Wat volgens haar wel vaststaat zijn de criteria waaraan een kandidaat moet voldoen. “We zoeken niet naar heilige mensen want die zijn in de hemel maar we zoeken wel naar eerlijke mensen. Indien je niet eerlijk bent, sorry voor je maar wij zullen niet naar je kijken. Vecht het dan uit met de rechterlijke macht”.
"We gaan het land op een eerlijke manier besturen. Ik beloof u niet dat wij van vuil drinkwater zullen gaan naar schoon drinkwater in een jaar maar we zullen ons inzetten om het mogelijk te maken", zegt Simons. Volgens haar is ook de NDP niet in staat geweest om corruptie volledig uit te roeien.

The chairperson of the NDP, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, states that it is not true that the NDP did nothing about land rights during their ten years in power. André Misikaba added that the NDP did initiate efforts in this area. Although a law was approved, it was not enacted.
The NDP is a party that has consistently promoted women. "We will continue on this path." Simons is not yet ready to reveal who will be on the candidate list for the National Assembly (DNA). However, she emphasizes that there are specific criteria candidates must meet. "We are not looking for saints because they are in heaven, but we are looking for honest people. If you are not honest, sorry, but we will not consider you. You will have to deal with the judiciary."
"We will govern the country in an honest manner. I cannot promise you that we will transition from dirty to clean drinking water in a year, but we will strive to make it possible," says Simons. She also acknowledges that the NDP has not been able to completely eradicate corruption.

A second group of Mennonites arrived in Suriname last week
Ondernemer Lex van Dijk van Suriname Pig Farms NV heeft zeven Mennonieten families uit Bolivia naar Suriname gehaald. Zij zijn bezig met werkzaamheden te Tibiti.
Een paar maanden geleden heeft de ondernemer vier families als testfase laten overkomen. Zij voldoen volgens de ondernemer heel goed. Er is 120 ha weiland omgeploegd. "Over twee weken gaan wij soya en mais zaaien. Ze hebben heel hard gewerkt", zegt Van Dijk desgevraagd aan Starnieuws. Na de vier families zijn afgelopen week nog drie families naar Suriname gekomen. Het gaat in totaal om 36 Mennonieten.
Van Dijk voert aan dat de Mennonieten zich ook moeten bewijzen en Surinamers moeten hen een kans geven. Zijn varkensbedrijf heeft voer nodig. Door mais en soya hier op grote schaal te planten, worden deviezen bespaard, voert de ondernemer aan. De Mennonieten zijn experts op het gebied landbouw, van planten van soya en mais. Zijn bedrijf exporteert ook varkens naar Barbados en Guyana. Hij heeft drie dagen geleden 120 levende biggen naar Guyana geëxporteerd omdat het buurland niet de kwaliteit heeft als in Suriname. Het bedrijf heeft meer dan 8.000 varkens en is het enige in Caricom dat is gecertificeerd.
Om voer te maken hoeven geen grondstoffen geïmporteerd te worden als voldoende mais en soya geplant kunnen worden. In de eerste fase is 120 ha geploegd. Bij de volgende regentijd wordt het aantal ha verdubbeld. Twee crops kunnen per jaar worden geplant omdat er twee regenseizoenen zijn. "Er worden geen bomen omgekapt, het gaat om weiland", benadrukt Van Dijk.
De Mennonieten verblijven op het terrein van de ondernemer bij de boerderij in het Tibitigebied. De aanvraag voor werkvergunningen worden in orde gemaakt. "Ze zijn op mijn terrein. Ze komen nergens van de overheid of op iemand anders terrein. Ze halen ook geen bomen weg, zoals men beweert. Er wordt niet ontbost, dat absoluut niet. Alles gebeurt op mijn terrein, mijn boerderijen", stelt de ondernemer. "Laten we de mensen de kans geven om ons bij te staan. De grote voedselschuur waarover men jaren schreeuwt, kan nu eindelijk van de grond komen."
Entrepreneur Lex van Dijk of Suriname Pig Farms NV has brought seven Mennonite families from Bolivia to Suriname. They are currently working in Tibiti. A few months ago, Van Dijk brought over four families as a test phase, and according to him, they have performed exceptionally well. They have plowed 120 hectares of pastureland. "In two weeks, we will start planting soy and corn. They have worked very hard," Van Dijk told Starnieuws upon request. After the initial four families, three more families arrived in Suriname last week, making a total of 36 Mennonites.
Van Dijk emphasizes that the Mennonites must prove themselves, and Surinamese people should give them a chance. His pig farm requires feed, and by planting corn and soy on a large scale locally, foreign exchange can be saved, he argues. The Mennonites are experts in agriculture, particularly in planting soy and corn. His company also exports pigs to Barbados and Guyana. Three days ago, he exported 120 live piglets to Guyana due to the neighboring country's lack of quality compared to Suriname. The company has more than 8,000 pigs and is the only one certified in the Caricom region.
To produce feed, no raw materials need to be imported if enough corn and soy can be planted. In the first phase, 120 hectares have been plowed. During the next rainy season, the number of hectares will be doubled. Two crops can be planted per year because there are two rainy seasons. "No trees are being cut down; it's pastureland," Van Dijk emphasizes.
The Mennonites are staying on the entrepreneur's property near the farm in the Tibiti area. Applications for work permits are being processed. "They are on my property. They are not on any government or other person's land. They are not removing any trees, as some claim. There is absolutely no deforestation.
